Junk Removal in Brandon

The county will take ten cubic yards of bulky waste a year, free, if you unload it by hand. A single 10 yard container is more than that in one afternoon, and you do not touch the material twice. We bring the box; you fill it on your own schedule.

The case for a container in Brandon is made with the county’s own numbers, so here they are. Hillsborough County will collect bulky household items at the curb, scheduled in advance through Solid Waste on (813) 272-5680, and it charges by the item: roughly $30 to $50 apiece depending on what it is, with appliances and large televisions at the top of that range. Cardboard is counted in blocks of twenty boxes to the item. That is a perfectly reasonable service for the couch and the mattress. It is not a cleanout. Four bulky items is somewhere between $120 and $200 before you have touched the shelving, the paint cans, the broken patio furniture or the forty boxes in the garage. The moment a job has more than a handful of pieces in it, per-item pricing stops being the cheap option and starts being the expensive one, and a container on the driveway is the answer.

The free route has limits too, and they are worth reading before you rely on them. Hillsborough runs Community Collection Centers where a household with proof of residency can drop bulky waste and appliances, and the free allowance is 10 cubic yards per household per year. Ten cubic yards a year. That is less than one 10 yard container, which is the smallest box we run. The county also says plainly how it has to arrive: “Bulky waste must be self-unloaded by hand. No dump trailers allowed.” So the free option is your vehicle, your back, the center’s opening hours and an annual cap you can exceed in a single Saturday. Nothing about that is unreasonable for a county to offer. It simply is not built for emptying a house, and pretending otherwise is how people end up making six trips and still having a pile on the drive.

There is a third county number that catches people out at the end of the job rather than the start. Hillsborough applies a surcharge of twice the posted rate on mixed loads. That exists because the county burns most of its garbage: the Resource Recovery Facility at 350 N Falkenburg Road takes about 1,800 tons a day and is listed as accepting burnable waste only, which is why the county’s rate sheet separates processable from non-processable material in the first place. A container full of furniture, boxes, carpet and household goods is a clean burnable load. Throw the broken patio slab and half a wheelbarrow of dirt on top of it and it is a different load at a different price. If your cleanout has masonry in it, say so when you book and we will bring a small second box for it. That is not upselling, it is the arithmetic.

What actually comes out of a Brandon house is fairly consistent, because the houses are fairly consistent. This is a 1970s and 1980s suburb of slab-on-grade homes with no basement, so the storage happened in the garage and on the lanai. The garage holds the shelving, the tools, the paint, the camping gear, the chest freezer and the lumber from an abandoned project. The lanai holds the patio furniture, the grill and the outdoor carpet somebody laid over the slab. Inside, it is closets, a spare bedroom used as a store room, and the contents of a kitchen that has not been reorganized since it was built. All of it is bulky rather than heavy, which is good news for sizing: household junk fills volume long before it builds weight, so a 20 yard usually goes out comfortably full rather than overweight.

A few things cannot go in any container we place, and they are the same few every time. Lead-acid batteries are banned outright under § 403.708(12), Fla. Stat., from landfills and waste-to-energy facilities alike, which is a live restriction here rather than a technicality. Paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fuel, propane cylinders, tires and electronics stay out as well. The Community Collection Centers take household chemicals, paint, batteries, electronics and tires, and that is the right route for them. Anything with refrigerant needs handling before it is scrapped. Ask us if you are unsure rather than burying it in the middle of a load, because a rejected load costs a great deal more than a phone call, and a container that has to be re-sorted on the driveway costs a day. Florida disposal rules covers the full list, and if you are not sure whether something belongs in the box, the yard will tell you in one call on (813) 773-2486.

What Comes Out Of A Brandon House

Garage Purge

Shelving, tools, paint, camping gear, bicycles, a chest freezer and lumber bought for a project that never started. In a slab house the garage is the storage room, and it is nearly always the biggest part of the job.

Lanai And Patio Clear-Out

Patio furniture, a grill, planters, screen panels and outdoor carpet laid over the slab. Bulky, light and easy to load, and it usually goes faster than anybody expects.

Furniture And Mattresses

Sofas, bed frames, mattresses, dressers and dining sets. At roughly $30 to $50 each through the county’s bulky pickup, four pieces already cost more than most people assume the whole job would.

Appliances

Ranges, washers, dryers, dishwashers and refrigerators. These sit at the top of the county’s per-item price range, and anything holding refrigerant needs proper handling before it is scrapped.

Closets, Attic Access And Spare Rooms

Boxed paper, clothing, holiday decorations and the spare bedroom that quietly became a store room. High volume, low weight, and it loads level.

Old Electronics And Office Equipment

Televisions, monitors, printers and computer towers. These do not belong in a roll-off; the Community Collection Centers take electronics and that is where they should go.

Yard Furniture, Fence And Screen

Broken fence panels, a torn screen enclosure section, planters and pavers. Watch the pavers, because masonry turns a clean burnable load into a mixed one at twice the posted rate.

Post-Tenancy Clear-Out

Whatever the last occupant left behind, on a deadline set by the next lease. Owner-occupancy in Brandon runs below the county average, so this is ordinary work here rather than an unusual call.

How Big A Box For A Cleanout

Household junk is volume, not weight, so sizing is about how much house you are emptying. A 10 yard suits a single room, a small garage corner or any load that turns dense, and it is worth remembering that one 10 yard is already more than the county’s entire free yearly bulky allowance. A 15 yard covers a garage emptied properly or a couple of rooms cleared. A 20 yard is the Brandon default for a whole-house declutter, and it is the box we deliver most for this work. A 30 yard is for a house going out completely, which usually means an estate job. The mistake to avoid is mixing dense material into a household load, because the county charges twice the posted rate on a mixed load. Keep masonry, dirt and rubble in their own small box. Dimensions are on the container sizes page, and the sizing guide works through the common jobs.

Loading It, Keeping It Dry And What Stays Out

Load a cleanout box from the back forward and keep it level rather than heaping it at the door end. Furniture goes in upright against the walls, boxes fill the gaps, mattresses lie flat, and nothing sits proud of the fill line, because a container has to be legal to move as well as full. Keep a tarp on it. Roughly thirty inches of rain falls across June to September in near-daily afternoon storms, and cardboard, upholstery and mattresses absorb an extraordinary amount of it. Water is weight you pay to haul. Placement is straightforward on these flat lots: concrete rather than grass, because Myakka fine sand is very poorly to poorly drained with a water table under 18 inches for one to four months in most years and a loaded box will sink into a wet lawn. Plywood under the wheels and rails on every set. What stays out is short and firm: lead-acid batteries, banned under § 403.708(12), Fla. Stat.; paint, solvents and pool chemicals; fuel and propane cylinders; tires; electronics; and anything holding refrigerant until it has been handled properly. The Community Collection Centers take most of those instead.

Junk Removal Dumpsters FAQs

Is a container really cheaper than the county pickup?

For anything bigger than a couple of pieces, yes. Hillsborough charges roughly $30 to $50 per item for scheduled bulky curbside pickup, so four items is already $120 to $200 and a garage full is not a serious proposition at that rate. The free alternative is the Community Collection Centers, where a household gets 10 cubic yards a year, self-unloaded by hand, with no dump trailers allowed. That is less than one 10 yard container, and it is your vehicle and your back. A container on the driveway takes more than the whole yearly allowance in one afternoon and you handle the material once. Call the yard on (813) 773-2486 and we will price it plainly.

What will you not take?

Lead-acid batteries first, because that one is statutory: § 403.708(12), Fla. Stat., bars them from landfills and from waste-to-energy facilities, and Hillsborough burns most of its garbage. Then paint, solvents, pool chemicals, fuel, propane cylinders, tires and electronics. Anything holding refrigerant needs handling before it is scrapped. None of that is difficult to deal with, it just does not belong in a roll-off. The county’s Community Collection Centers accept household chemicals, paint, batteries, electronics and tires from residents with proof of residency. If you are unsure about an item, ask us before it goes in rather than after.

Do you load it for me?

We bring the container, place it properly and take it away. The loading is yours, which is what keeps the price where it is, and on a household cleanout it is usually the part people want to control anyway because sorting happens as you go. What we will do is set the box where the carry is shortest, which on a Brandon slab house nearly always means on the driveway with the tailgate facing the garage. If the job needs to be split into a light box and a heavy box, tell us at booking and we will bring the pair rather than making you decide halfway through.

How long does a garage cleanout usually take?

Longer than the volume suggests and shorter than the emotional part. Most people work a garage across a weekend or two, and there is no need to rush it: keep the container as long as the job honestly needs on private ground and call the yard when you want it collected. The one thing to watch is the weather. An open box standing through an August week collects near-daily afternoon rain, and soaked cardboard and upholstery gain real weight. Tarp it between sessions. If a second box would let you finish in one go, that is often the better arrangement.

Can I mix everything into one container?

You can, but Hillsborough applies a surcharge of twice the posted rate on mixed loads, so it is worth thinking about. The county burns most of its garbage at the Resource Recovery Facility on Falkenburg Road, listed as taking burnable waste only, which is why its rate sheet splits processable from non-processable material. A clean load of household goods, furniture, carpet and cardboard is straightforward. Add a broken patio slab, a load of pavers or a wheelbarrow of dirt and the whole container becomes a mixed load. If your cleanout has masonry in it, we will bring a small second box and the total usually comes out lower.
